A Guide to Reiki Hand Positions

>> CLICK HERE To Learn Reiki From Two Highly Experienced Usui Reiki Masters

Reiki practitioners use hand positions to assist them in guiding energy through the body’s channels. Although certain hand positions are taught to Reiki practitioners, these positions are only a guideline.

There is not one set, correct way to “do Reiki.” Rather, each person adds their own experience and intuition into the process.

The series of hand positions taught are spaced throughout the client’s body so as to provide good coverage. Covering all parts of the body evenly will assure that the client will get the best treatment and encourage the energy to flow throughout. Some practitioners will sweep their hands over the front and back of the body looking for hot spots which need healing and focus on this area.

The hand positions can be used either touching the body, holding the hands over the body, or over the client’s hands which are then guided by the Reiki practitioner. Some of the hand placements are near private areas, so be sure to indicate that to the client beforehand.

Three common hand positions are listed below. For these positions, have the client lie down.

1. Stand behind the client and place your hands gently over your clients eyes. Keep your palms down and your fingers pointing toward the client’s toes. Take special care to not squeeze the nose.

2. Place your hands around the temples.

3. Cradle the head with your hands. Gently rock the head to one side, slide your hand underneath, and then repeat to the other side. Make sure it is centered on both hands.

These positions and more are taught in classes, books, and videos on the subject. None of the positions are complicated and they are ideal for a beginning learner.

Charging for Reiki in the UK

    >> CLICK HERE To Learn Reiki From Two Highly Experienced Usui Reiki Masters

Reiki and charging money - a highly charged subject indeed!

If you are not of the Reiki community, you could be forgiven for thinking that anyone working for free or almost free is totally mad.

So what is it about Reiki that is contradictory to charging for one's time? Nothing. As a matter of fact, Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, advocated an exchange for the healing in order to empower the healee to take an active part in their healing process.

How did the Reiki healing community get to this point?

History has a part to play. When Reiki first came to the West, people were charged obscene amounts of money to become a Reiki healer. This was not a true reflection of the value of the initiation and teaching to the healer, and healers rebelled against this at the first opportunity.

Then again, there is the way in which Reiki at a professional level spread through the world. From a purely financial point of view, it was largely, and for many still is, a cottage industry for housewives, the disabled, retirees, and people already in work looking for a second income. It is very easy for anyone in this situation to miscalculate their true overheads. It is even easier not to need to make a living with Reiki if there is already a source of income, be it a loving husband, disability benefits, a pension, or a secure job.

There is also the driver which leads us to Reiki in the first Place. Most of us come to Reiki because of a need for physical or emotional healing. This may be our own need or that of a loved one whom we know is suffering. Immediately after the initiation, a Reiki healer starts self-healing each day, and soon progresses onto healing loved ones in need. The emphasis is on self-development and helping loved ones. The Reiki healer then spends months or years in this relationship with Reiki, and it is very hard to suddenly switch to having a financial relationship with Reiki too.

Then again for many, Reiki is a spiritual discipline, and for many, spirituality is misunderstood as being divorced from monetary gain. I feel that Reiki is about unconditional love, and that spirituality is about abundance for the highest good. Let me illustrate. Sandra goes to work on a chicken battery farm, where chickens are bred to have chests that are so heavy, these birds have been proven scientifically to be in constant pain. Sandra has also learned Reiki to professional level but since Reiki is spiritual, she will not charge for her Reiki sessions. If she does charge, it is not a sufficient amount to enable her to give up her job at the chicken battery farm. But Mikao Usui told us to be gracious to every living thing, and Sandra tortures chickens for a living! Society's standards about spirituality, handed down over the ages for the rich to control the poor, are to blame.

Reiki is gaining popularity in the UK as a healing modality. Many clients come to me for healing anxiety, depression, joint pain, arthritis, and many other conditions with Reiki. At the same time, many healers have been received their Reiki professional-level training in a very short workshop or even in half an hour over the internet! They do not have the necessary training for client care, clinical practice, the law, tax, conditions requiring urgent medical attention, and health and safety. Quite rightly, these Reiki healers, although on paper possessing the Reiki healer certificate, know that they are in no position to charge. Unfortunately, many of these healers are simply unaware that Reiki is more than a quick initiation and nice warm feeling. No-one has told them! They have been taught by a Reiki Master teacher after a quick buck or (and this is more usually the case) just as ignorant themselves.

Add to the above the proliferation of Reiki healers in the UK today, where competition drives prices down. If one has little or no business training, it is easy to make the assumption that if you charge less, you will get the work. The fact is that if you charge less, you starve. Hence many Reiki practitioners give up the idea of doing Reiki full-time, as they need to make a living and cannot survive on what they charge. This leads to many Reiki healers competing for even less money, as they can afford to offer it for less part-time.

There is also an element of self-esteem. Many Reiki healers have been drawn to Reiki in order to heal low self-esteem. Somehow along the line, they take professional training but do not complete their self-healing. I do not blame them, as often self-healing can be painful! But if one doesn't value oneself, one simply does not charge for services given or charges very little.

Then there is the weirdness of the Reiki session as a process. To many, this feels like just laying the hands on the healee and "doing nothing". With time and experience, a Reiki healer becomes an active participant in the healing process, and even if this never happens, the results that clients report back are too astounding to be ignored! Somewhere along the line with many healers though, they begin to doubt that the are "doing anything" and of course if one is "doing nothing" then one has to charge nothing!

And then there are those erstwhile healers that give Reiki sessions as part of their job, albeit unofficially. Since it is unofficial, they do not view the Reiki as paid employment, even though they are being paid and are working as Reiki healers.

My hope is that the forthcoming Reiki Regulation in the UK will lead to the support of the Reiki healers that do want to work professionally. Reiki healers working unoficially will be recognised and more Reiki healers will be able to work full-time. The result? Freedom for chickens would be nice!

    Reiki Master Symbol Revealed

    >> CLICK HERE To Learn Reiki From Two Highly Experienced Usui Reiki Masters

A reiki master symbol may be used during a healing by a Reiki practitioner or during an attunement, which may be described as the first step in learning Reiki. The reiki symbols revealed to Usui Mikao at the end of his twenty-one day fast are referred to as Usui Reiki symbols. Other Reiki systems use different or additional symbols.

Some believe that Reiki symbols should be kept secret. Others will share the symbols easily enough, but will only explain how to use them after a student has paid a fee. Some Reiki masters charge for healings and attunements, while others teach that the power to heal lies within each of us and charge a fee for teaching a person to tap into that healing power. Charging a fee is actually a Reiki tradition.

According to legend, Usui Mikao originally performed healings for free in the poor sections of Kyoto Japan. Among other things, he used Reiki to help beggars find jobs, return to work and leave the life of begging behind. He was disappointed when he saw that many of the people he had helped eventually returned to begging. After questioning the beggars and meditating on the problem, he came up with a solution.

He believed that without attaching a fee to the service, the value of the treatments was not appreciated. It is easy to understand. Most people readily accept the responsibility of protecting an item for which they have paid a high price, but are less inclined to protect something for which they paid nothing. So, he closed his practice and began traveling throughout Japan teaching the Reiki healing system to others, with the understanding that Reiki power should not be given away for free.

Around the same time, he became aware that the reiki symbols revealed to him on Mount Kurama, after his long fast, were to be used for helping others to learn the system. The Reiki Master symbol or the Usui Master symbol was taught or given after a student had reached the Master level in his studies. Other Usui Reiki symbols were used by Master Mikao to help his students focus on different aspects of Reiki energy.

There is some disagreement among Reiki masters concerning the power of Usui Reiki symbols, but most agree that the symbols have no real power of their own. Even a Reiki Master symbol has no protective or healing value, unless a Reiki Master has “empowered” that symbol. Even Master Mikao did not use the Reiki symbols revealed to him on the mountain, until he saw that the symbols allowed students to more easily focus their healing energy.

    Anyone Can Learn Reiki

    >> CLICK HERE To Learn Reiki From Two Highly Experienced Usui Reiki Masters

Anyone can learn Reiki. At one time, Reiki courses were only given to a select few, at a very high price. Today, things have changed somewhat, although there are still groups of Reiki practitioners that charge high fees for master training.

There are several different versions of the history of Reiki. There are also different viewpoints as to how one should learn Reiki. It is interesting that the Western version of the history of Reiki differs from that of the Eastern version. The Western version seems to have been embellished somewhat, but that is a personal opinion.

The fees charged for Reiki courses vary greatly, although it has always been customary to charge a fee. For example, Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to Hawaii from Japan in the late 1930s, charged $10,000 for master Reiki courses. One of her students, Iris Ishikuro apparently believed that more people should be able to learn Reiki and chose to charge lower fees for training. Other students of Takata continued to follow a fee structure similar to hers.

Different factions have developed over time and on many points they disagree. All of the factions agree that the first person to offer Reiki courses was Usui Mikao.

The students of Usui Mikao referred to him as Usui-sensei. Sensei is a Japanese title of respect used to address teachers and other professionals such as doctors or lawyers. In the West, he is sometimes referred to as Dr. Usui, and while there is no proof that he held a doctorate or a medical degree, he definitely did practice a form of medicine. So, how did Usui Mikao learn Reiki?

There are many stories and legends, but from what we can tell, he came to understand Reiki energy on the 21st day of a meditation and fasting retreat on Mount Kurama. Some factions say that he had been searching for the answer to the question of how Jesus healed with his hands and that the answer was given to him on the mountain.

Others say that he was seeking the meaning of life, a satori or moment of enlightenment. Some say that he was a professor of Christian theology. Others say that he was probably a Buddhist. Some groups that offer Reiki courses incorporate religious ideas, from various religions, into their teachings. But, there is one thing that we can say for a certainty; Reiki is not a religion.

In order to learn Reiki, it is not necessary to give up your own religious beliefs. It is not necessary to “convert” to another religion. And, if you have no religion, that’s okay, too. All that is required is that you accept that Reiki energy exists and can be used to heal. Please visit http://understanding-reiki.com to learn more.
