A Guide to Reiki Hand Positions

Reiki practitioners use hand positions to assist them in guiding energy through the body’s channels. Although certain hand positions are taught to Reiki practitioners, these positions are only a guideline.

There is not one set, correct way to “do Reiki.” Rather, each person adds their own experience and intuition into the process.

The series of hand positions taught are spaced throughout the client’s body so as to provide good coverage. Covering all parts of the body evenly will assure that the client will get the best treatment and encourage the energy to flow throughout. Some practitioners will sweep their hands over the front and back of the body looking for hot spots which need healing and focus on this area.

The hand positions can be used either touching the body, holding the hands over the body, or over the client’s hands which are then guided by the Reiki practitioner. Some of the hand placements are near private areas, so be sure to indicate that to the client beforehand.

Three common hand positions are listed below. For these positions, have the client lie down.

1. Stand behind the client and place your hands gently over your clients eyes. Keep your palms down and your fingers pointing toward the client’s toes. Take special care to not squeeze the nose.

2. Place your hands around the temples.

3. Cradle the head with your hands. Gently rock the head to one side, slide your hand underneath, and then repeat to the other side. Make sure it is centered on both hands.

These positions and more are taught in classes, books, and videos on the subject. None of the positions are complicated and they are ideal for a beginning learner.
